Abstract
This study purposes to enhance the capabilities of children with Autism Spectrum Disorder(ASD) to discriminate and apply Emoticons as tools to communicate their own feelings and events in ¡°social media¡± through Discrete Trial Teaching(DTT). The subjects consisted of three sixth-graders with ASD, and multiple baseline design across participants was employed. In the phase of intervention, discrimination and matching of reading cards identified with Emoticon situations, and discrimination of Emoticons with Discriminative stimulus (SD) were taught in a DTT mode. In the phase of generalization, children were told to sort out Emoticons by utilizing actual smart phones. The results of the study are as follows: First, discrete trial teaching was proved to improve the capabilities to discriminate Emoticons. Second, DTT turned out to be effective in generalization and maintenance of discrimination skills acquired during intervention phases. Especially, children proved to carry out generalized responses to inquiries on various situations and Emoticons that were not even learned or experienced yet during generalization phase when they were told to utilize real smart phones. Several discussions and suggestions were offered in the final section on the basis of these results of the study.
